Chapter 14

Selasie’s House

D

ressed like a runway model with a flowing sleeveless tiger print blouse and black cropped pants, Suzanna Selasie picked them up in a spacious gold SUV with tanned leather interior.

There were two rows, including the front cabin. They let Sadie stretch out in the comfy, softback row while Jalind, Printa, and Harrah sat in the three middle row seats. It didn’t matter who was where, how they positioned their leg or feet, even if they had pulled out a knife and slashed the velvety ceiling. Suzanna was elated that all had gone well. That put her in a talking mood.

“Dear God, I prayed so hard, and when I couldn’t reach your cell, I nearly had a heart attack. I wouldn’t have liked going to the hospital, so Heathcliff would have treated me at home. As you know, Garrett Heathcliff has a fully functional medical clinic at the house. You know he’s a medical doctor, scientist, and so much more, but I don’t want to brag. My Heathcliff is simply brilliant, such a brainiac.”

“Humm, mmhm, eh.”

“Did someone say something?” Suzanna asked

“No,” Garrett said. “Glad you didn’t have a heart attack. We couldn’t have stood any more excitement this night, right guys?”

“Right,” Harrah, Jalind, and Printa drowsily answered.

Gripping the wheel, Suzanna asked, “so tell me what happened?”

Printa chirped, “Sadie had an attack that looked like she stopped breathing, but I think it was so much more than that.”

Garrett and Suzanna glanced at each other.

Suzanna shook her head. “Poor little darling, no telling what Hanna put her through and oh, my God, the drugs they must’ve given her.”

“Save some of that sympathy for Hanna. Sadie messed up her crew. One was fatal, besides what Jalind and me left in the hall. And then she sent Hanna out on a stretcher with burned wombs from chains. They were all over her body,” Garrett said.

Suzanna gasped, then snickered.

“Really, on a stretcher? Well then, good job, Sadie.”

The small talk between Garrett and Suzanna turned into a solemn dose of reality.

“What Sadie did to Hanna may have been the ‘creme de la crème’ compared to what they might do to her. Dead people clean-up is definitely frowned upon,” Suzanna said.

“Yeah.” Garrett held his head down. “Me and Jalind got our own sins to pay for, spirits looking for retribution.”

“Ah, come on, you did what you had to. I dare a spirit to come to Saint Helena Island looking for you.”

Harrah actually giggled at Suzanna’s jesting. “She’s not as stuck-up as I thought,” she whispered to Jalind and Printa.

“Told ya,” Jalind answered.

“Guys, let’s just be happy we’re not in the Horror House anymore. ‘J,’ maybe I’ll live after all.”

“You will live, Printa.” Jalind answered.

Suzanna drove for another twenty minutes before turning onto a dirt road; the car rocked and bounced until crossing over a smooth, slightly rugged area. The SUV was flooded with light as if day had pushed back the night.

She cut the ignition. “We’re home.”

“Doggone Suzanna, this one’s more impressive than the one on Daufuskie,” Garrett said.
